Overwatch Players are Migrating to PUBG

According to data gathered by Newzoo, players are now leaving Overwatch for the new battle royale shooter PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Numbers cite that 25% of the players that stopped playing Overwatch had switched over to PUBG, meanwhile CS:GO saw 21% of former players switching over to PUBG as well.

In its data, Newzoo defined the term "churn rate" as referring to players who have played a specific title for at least two months or longer, but have stopped playing and have transitioned to another title that they are frequently playing.

Of the people who stopped playing Overwatch in July, 25.2% were playing Battlegrounds. This was most pronounced in Japan where the figure was 54.7%.

Churn from CS:GO was also high with 21.1% globally and 31.9% in the United States.

Of the people who stopped playing Minecraft and World of Warcraft in July, 14.2% and 19.6% were playing PUBG, respectively.

These findings come as no surprise, since its launch in March this year, PUBG has sold over 2 million copies to date, even spurring rumors of tech giant Tencent buying stakes in Bluehole Studios due to the game's overwhelming success.

Only time can tell whether PUBG's initial success will continue in the long run. Though given the game's impressive numbers, PUBG has more than secured its place as a big player against its competitors.
