Pokemon GO developer, Niantic, has launched a new social media platform called Campfire that’s designed to make it easier for augmented reality (AR) gamers to connect with each other. Campfire features a map that shows nearby people and events as well as a messaging feature that will allow players to communicated with one another and organize meetups and events.

“Campfire [is] a social application for the real-world metaverse that weaves together our games and helps players discover new people, places and experiences,” announced Niantic during their first-ever Lightship Summit for AR developers which was held in San Francisco earlier this week.

During the summit, the studio also announced their new Lightship Visual Positioning System (VPS) that allows developers to more accurately pinpoint the position of their users and place AR content and points of interest with “centimeter-level precision” for a more immersive experience.

As for Campfire, the platform can now be used with Ingress and will be coming to their other AR games, including Pokemon GO, later this summer.

More information about Campfire and the Lightship VPS can be found on the Niantic official site. You can also check out the video below for a preview of the new visual positioning system.
