Screeps, The MMORTS For Programmers, Launches On Steam Early Access

Screeps Team announced today that its programming MMORTS Screeps has gone live on Steam Early Access. If you've ever wanted more of a thinking man's MMO or you've ever thought that you're better at programming macros than playing MMOs, you might want to give it a look.

Here are some facts about Screeps that were included in the press release.

  • The game has raised totally $20,794 in two Indiegogo campaigns.
  • The game world was publicly launched on August 20, 2015, while the Steam version launches today, June 20, 2016.
  • You play by writing JavaScript AI which controls your units 24/7 even while you're offline.
  • All players coexist in the same real-time persistent world.
  • Units, base, mining resources, territory control, economy, manufacturing, transporting, logistics, trading – all the attributes of a real strategy game which you need to program.
  • Open source game server engine.
  • An option to create your own local world and play with friends.

Previously available only as a browser title, the version of Screeps available on Steam Early Access allows players to host their own worlds in addition to playing on the public MMO server. Lifetime access costs $14.99, but players can pay $8.99 per month to increase the amount of CPU that their scripts are allowed to use.
