Sega Sammy reported their Q2 2021 earnings report today with total revenue coming in at 59,447 million yen for the quarter ($450M). More interestingly though, the company continues to break down their top performing games. The top 3 revenue generating titles for the company were as follows: Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, and Fist of the North Star Legends ReVIVE.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is off to a strong start. The Japanese version hit 6.5 million registered users while the overseas market reached 2.5 million for a total of 9 million players. Monthly active users for the game are an all time high in both Japan and overseas markets. More interestingly though, Sega disclosed that since Phantasy Star Online 2's launch in July, 2012, the game has achieved cumulative sales of 100B Yen ($910M USD).

I don't know much about Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku, but since last month the game has fluctuated between the #4 and #83 spot on the App Store's highest grossing games list in Japan, which definitely isn't bad. It also out-earned every other Sega title for the quarter.

The revenue split between traditional buy to play titles and free to play titles is about 50/50 with the Japanese free to play market bringing in over 85% of the company's free to play revenues. On the traditional buy to play side, over 80% of Sega's revenues come form North America and Europe. It looks like Japanese love free to play games while the West still prefers the old model, at least for Sega.
