It looks like Swords of Legends Online can’t quite hack it in the world of buy-to-play games in spite of its initial popularity and “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam. Publisher Gameforge has announced that the game will be going free-to-play later this month with the release of The Firestone Legacy expansion.

“Over the past few months, player population growth has become a concern for our community–and we have listened,” said Gameforge Vice President of Product Noemi Feller. “After careful consideration and discussions with Wangyuan Shengtang & Aurogon, we have jointly decided to remove the paywall and allow more players to join SOLO and enjoy the vast amounts of content currently available, with even more already planned through 2022 and beyond.”

Following the switch, cosmetic items from the cash shop will still remain purely cosmetic while players who purchased the game will receive a special set of items as compensation. Players who purchased the game from January 17th until February 1st can request for a refund but won’t be able to play the game until it goes free-to-play should they request for one.

The Firestone Legacy is slated to launch on February 24th featuring two new classes – the Fox Mage and the Warrior – along with new story content, new zones, new dungeons and raids, new PvP maps, a level cap increase, and additional character slots among others.
