Paramount Pictures and Saber Interactive, the developers behind Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, have just announced a brand-new AAA action RPG set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. While fans of the animated series have seen plenty of attempts to bring the Avatar saga into the gaming world—some more successful than others—this collaboration might finally be what we’ve all been waiting for.

Unlike previous adaptations, this action RPG will take place thousands of years before Aang and Korra, starring an all-new, never-before-seen Avatar. The game promises players will “master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world,” according to Paramount.

“We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building,” said Doug Rosen, SVP of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount. The goal here is to bring Avatar’s rich lore to life in a way that hasn’t been done before.

Saber Interactive has built a solid reputation for handling beloved IPs, and with World War Z and Warhammer 40K under their belt, there’s some cautious optimism that this RPG might just hit the mark. One can only hope. With the recent Netflix adaptation underwhelming fans and a history of hit-or-miss Avatar titles, the gaming community and Avatar fans are ready for this RPG to live up to the IP’s legacy.
