Chinese mega media corporation Tencent continues its mission to lodge itself into every nook and cranny of the video game industry as it secures minority ownership in Studio MayDay.

The New Zealand-based studio has rebranded themselves as Riffraff Games after receiving a “significant investment” from Tencent, reports GameIndustry.biz. They’ve also hired former ReedPop PAX Global Content Director Guy Blomberg as studio director.

“Tencent has been very supportive of our innovative roots and our desire to take creative risks,” said studio founder and CEO Joshua Boggs. “The resources, experience and mentorship it has provided is allowing Riffraff Games to pursue things we didn't know could be within our grasp. It's a really exciting time for the studio.”

The newly-relaunched Riffraff Games is known for the award-winning puzzle game, Framed, and is made up of developers from major video game companies such as Electronic Arts and Creative Assembly, and visual effects company Weta Digital. The studio is currently working on a third-person stealth action game and another unannounced title, one of which is slated for release later this year.

Just a few days ago, Tencent also became the majority shareholder of Madrid-based studio Tequila Works, developer of the Rime and Gylt adventure puzzle games.
