There’s only so much stuff you can do in an Assassin’s Creed before you ultimately leave it to accumulate dust on your shelf, on the bottom of your game drawer, or permanently delete it from your hard drive. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the latest game in the series, offers roughly around 150 hours of content without the DLCs for completionists and roughly 12 hours for speedrunners.

That’s all about to change as Ubisoft officially confirms that Assassin’s Creed Infinity will be live service game that will grow, expand, and evolve over time instead of being locked to one historical period. According to Bloomberg, Ubisoft’s decision was inspired by the seemingly infinite lifespan of Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto 5, both of which continue to generate revenue for Epic Games and Rockstar Games years after their initial release.

Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec will be working together on the game instead of alternating for each Assassin’s Creed game. Each studio will have their own creative director, Clint Hocking for Ubisoft Montreal and Jonathan Dumont for Ubisoft Quebec. Ubisoft Quebec Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté will be the head honcho for the entire project.

“[. . .] We’re also evolving along with the video game industry. The pandemic and working from home have fundamentally changed the way we produce games, giving us a moment to reflect on our organization,” said Ubisoft in a separate blog post.

“Rather than continuing to pass the baton from game to game, we profoundly believe this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft's most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that's less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft,” they added.
