Downsizing continues at Unity Technologies as the Unity Engine developer lays off an additional 1,800 of its employees. That translates to roughly 25% of its current workforce, in addition to those who were let go in three separate rounds of layoffs last year.

“Unity has made the difficult decision to implement a workforce reduction, targeting approximately 25% of our total workforce across all teams,” said Unity press relations director Kelly Ekins. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we extend our deepest gratitude to those affected for their dedication and contributions.”

According to the SEC filing, the layoffs are in line with Unity’s restructuring efforts as it shifts its focus back to its core business for long-term and profitable growth. The restructuring was alluded to in a letter to shareholders in November where it was touted as a “company reset” even as it saw a 69% increase in revenue for the third quarter of 2023.

The revenue increase can likely be attributed to the new per-install runtime fees that Unity sneakily introduced in September 2023. The move earned the company the ire of the entire developer community and forced then-CEO John Riccitiello to resign from his post.
