After an extremely long wait, Iron Gate Studios has finally rolled out Valheim’s Mistlands update without the usual fanfare associated with a major update. Mistlands quietly went live earlier yesterday, opening up the Viking survival sandbox’ largest biome to date.

Iron Gate notes that the Mistlands biome will only appear in undiscovered areas of the map and you might need to start a new world if you’ve already done a fair bit of exploring to be able to travel to the new biome. “As per usual, mods will also most likely cause the game not to launch, as they are only compatible with the latest Live version of the game,” the studio added. “If you have mods, you will either need to remove them or wait for the mod to be updated before you can play.”

The update also introduces a magic system to the game along with a new resource called Eitr. “Vikings can now harvest eitr, an ancient essence found in the roots of the Yggdrasil World Tree, and consume it to gain the ability to wield fire, ice, and power over life and death,” explained the studio. “Players must harness this power by crafting different staffs, with an array of destruction, protection and necromantic conduits to choose from.”

Players will also be able to gather new black marble guild materials and craft the new arbalest bow in addition to nine new weapons, new armor, and new interior housing decorations. They’ll also come across an assortment of new flying and land-locked enemies and the game’s first allied faction, the Dvergr.

Mistlands is just the first of several new biomes coming to the early access multiplayer sandbox game in the future which includes the Ashlands and Deep North zones. In the meantime, you’ve got a foggy new land to explore and new things to craft and build.

You can check out the official Mistlands release notes on the Valheim Steam page.
