Whitebox Interactive's Warhammer MOBA, Warhammer 40K: Dark Nexus Arena, was originally released on Steam Early Access on December 9, 2015 after a prolonged Closed Beta phase. It launched to "Mostly Negative" reviews—eventually settling at "Mixed" with a 40% positive rating at present—primarily due to a lack of polish. It was then updated regularly until January 25th, after which the developers went dark and no further updates were made to the game.

Last week, the game's homepage and Facebook page were updated to include the following message.

To all our Valued Customers:

We have some unfortunate news to announce; we have decided to stop development of Dark Nexus Arena.

We would like to thank our valued customers very much for their patronage and support. You guys have been great. We would like to send out a special thanks to Unrelenting Troll, BForster, Jenbu, GeekByte UK, Solomance, GingerJesus and everyone else for all of their support and help. We would also like to thank Games Workshop for their support and trust in a small company to allow us to work on this amazing project. This means a lot to us.

We were really hopeful to provide Warhammer 40,000 and MOBA fans a game that would encompass both aspects but unfortunately we missed the mark. We were in Beta for a year and have taken a lot of valuable feedback from our players. There has been excitement for the game but we haven’t grown enough to maintain development.

As part of the ending process, we will continue to keep servers up until March 31, 2016.

Once again, Whitebox would like to thank our customers and Games Workshop for all their support. We appreciate everything they have done for us.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Falkowski
CEO Whitebox Interactive

Despite the Warhammer 40K license, Dark Nexus Arena was never able to make it off the ground. Having personally played it, it had some good ideas—I particularly enjoyed the medic class—but it did lack polish in many areas. Those who are still playing the game have until March 31st to get their final matches in.
