Daybreak Game Company

Daybreak Game Company, previously known as Sony Online Entertainment, or SOE for short, is a subsidiary of the private equity group Columbus Nova. They focus on developing and publishing MMORPGs and helped pioneer the genre with the original Ever Quest game. Daybreak Game Company seeks to develop and provide the best online experiences on any platform they can deliver to all audiences.

Daybreak Game Company began with a focus on subscription based titles but later embraced the free to play business.  Daybreak's previous owner, Sony, is publicly traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol SNE. In 2006 they began publishing more games to their online platform through the Playstation Portable and the Playstation 3. Later in 2008, the online game division came under direct control of Sony Computer Entertainment and soon released their titles on Valve's popular Steam platform. On February 2, 2015 Sony officially announced that Sony Online Entertainment was sold to the private equity group Colombus Nova. Despite the sale and re-branding, Daybreak fully intends on operating Sony Online Entertainment's portfolio of games as well as work on developing their next generation titles. On August 21, 2015, John Smedley, a key executive within the company left to start his own company. Smedley had been with Daybreak/SOE since the EQ days.
