Avabel Online Review

By Herman Y.

Avabel Online is a free-to-play, 3D action MMORPG developed and published by Asobimo Inc., a Japanese company that has definitely left its mark in the mobile MMORPG world. Avabel Online became immensely popular after its English release in February 4, 2013 partly due to its exceptional quality for a mobile game and partly due to the lack of MMORPGs on Android and iOS. With a persistent world, action combat, and brilliant graphics, Avabel Online quickly became one of the most popular MMORPGs on mobile devices.

Classes and Character Creation

Avabel Online begins with character creation, where players can choose their gender and customize their characters with a handful of hair and face options. Starting out, players have no class and are only able to equip one-handed swords and daggers. At level 5, players can choose their first class out of seven possible choices. These classes include: Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, Creator, Magician, Acolyte, and Wonderer. Each class has different skills with unique functions and different gameplay in terms of combat. Players are recommended to try out each class and can switch between classes at any time until level 30. Players can unlock advanced classes at level 50, where they will have a choice between multiple advanced versions of their current classes.

The World of Avabel

Avabel Online consists of large, 3D world with beautiful environments both above ground and below it. Avabel has a semi-open world, meaning each map is a large persistent area with portals (on either side) to travel to the next or previous level. Each zone is crawling with monsters to fight and players to interact with. The game describes these zones as floors on a tower. It’s a bit hard to visualize since each of these zones are outdoors, but according to the developers, going through each zone (which increases in difficulty) is like going up a tower. The game has a total of sixteen floors. Dungeons are not considered part of the tower since they are instanced and underground. Dungeons are another aspect of the game where players can choose to party with other players or solo to complete. The “Main Tower,” which consists of the sixteen floors, is where players will spend most of their time in addition to the main town area, called the Base, where players can buy and sell items, chat with other players, and upgrade their equipment.

Beautiful Graphics

The graphics in Avabel Online are outstanding for a mobile MMORPG. It was one of the best looking mobile games when it came out in early 2013. Although it has aged slightly compared to newer mobile games, Avabel Online is still one of the best looking MMORPGs on Android and iOS. The world is bright, detailed, and colorful, and has a magical fantasy theme. It has a Final Fantasy feel to it and looks like a game Square Enix would have made. The monsters are varied in each map, and maps range from bright grasslands to foggy snowlands to dry, dusty deserts. There is also a huge variety in Avatars (costumes) that give characters a unique look. Despite the high quality graphics, the game runs well even on lower-end mobile devices.

Action Combat

Despite the popularity of point-and-click combat in early 2013, Avabel Online emerged with unique and engaging, action-oriented combat. Players can control their characters with a virtual joystick and attack by tapping a button. There is also a button to dodge, which is a huge plus in employing more tactical gameplay and buttons to use skills. The combat animations are quick, and although not as smooth as many newer action RPGs, they are still responsive and create an engaging experience. Each class has different gameplay, including slow attacking two-handed warriors, quick and deadly dual-wield rogues, tactically ranged archers, and powerful magic-casting mages. Some Floors have special bosses roaming around with huge amounts of HP and Attack Power that are a blast to fight. The bosses make me feel like I’m playing Monster Hunter and they can drop really rare items. However, they are difficult as they can kill players in about one to two hits. Players can also compete in real-time PVP against other players to obtain achievements which gives level experience (EXP) and skill experience (JEXP).

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)

As a free-to-play MMORPG, Avabel isn’t too IAP-dependent. The Gem Store includes Avatar packs, which offer a large variety in different costumes to customize your appearance (that don’t have any stats), Equipment Packs, containing 5-7 Star weapons and armors, Item Packs, containing coins and crafting/enhancement items, and Support Items, which include storage and inventory weight expansions. All of these packs are gambling-based, meaning you will receive something at random and cannot choose what to receive. This is a common feature in Asian mobile games and supposedly adds some excitement to the Cash Shop, although I personally find it to be a bit of a cash grab.

Although there are special Avatars and highly ranked equipment in the Gem Store, Avatars and equally powerful equipment can be obtained without spending cash from grinding, farming, and evolving equipment. Therefore, this game isn’t really pay-to-win if players are willing to spend the time to obtain Avatars and better equipment on their own. There are special Avatars and items (such as the storage and weight expansion items) that can only be obtained from the Gem Store, but are not necessary to have.

The Not-So-Good

Although this review has been mostly positive so far, my biggest complaints about Avabel Online are the UI (user interface) and grinding. I found the UI and menus in Avabel Online to be extremely clunky and outdated despite the game’s impressive graphics. It was difficult navigating through the menus and just looking for items in your inventory feels like a chore. You have to go through multiple screens just to equip one piece of equipment and the interfaces look very old and unappealing. There are also too many skills and too little hotkey slots. However, most of these problems are just convenience issues, so they are less of a problem once you get used to it.

The second biggest problem with Avabel is the grinding. Avabel doesn’t have a story and provides simple quests that aid in the leveling process such as to kill a certain number of monsters in each Floor. These quests are very short and players will generally find themselves grinding away at monsters to level up on their own. Leveling up allows players to use better equipment, get new skills, and survive in harder Floors. Therefore, most of the gameplay ends up being about leveling up and gradually moving up the “tower” for no real reason.

Final Verdict - Great

Despite the endless grinding and outdated UI, Avabel Online is an exceptional MMORPG that excels in many different aspects. It has beautiful graphics, action combat, a large playerbase, lenient in-app purchases, and lots of content that makes up for these flaws. Overall, Avabel Online is a game that is just fun to play, even while grinding, and still holds its place as being one of the best mobile MMORPGs over two years after its release.
