Mobius Final FantasyReview

By, Marc Marasigan

Mobius Final Fantasy is a 3D turn-based multiplatform MMORPG set in the mythical world of Palamecia. Players take on the role of Blanks, warriors from different dimensions which may or may not turn out to be the prophesied Warrior of the Light destined to save Palamecia from doom and destruction. The game was initially available on mobile devices before it was ported over to Steam in February 2017. The PC version features improved 4K graphics and 60 FPS gameplay.

Where Have The Chocobos Gone?

As can be expected from a Final Fantasy game, Mobius Final Fantasy features, stunning visuals, gorgeous cinematics, superb voice-acting, a great soundtrack, along with the distinct sound effects that have become a part of the series, not to mention the obligatory grunge-y, emo-y lead character. If you’re a fan of the franchise you’ll know what I’m talking about. I expected more from the storyline though, and, surprisingly, I have yet to come across a Chocobo.

Learning The Ropes

Right off the bat, the game gives players the choice of playing through the tutorial or skipping it entirely. The tutorial walks players through combat, abilities, and deck-building. And yes, this is a card-based MMORPG which I’ll explain later below. I do recommend going through the tutorial even if it’s just for the rewards. Plus, the entire thing takes around 30 minutes to clear, which will probably be a fraction of the time you’ll be spending fumbling through the game’s slightly confusing array of menus, panels, and currencies, should you decide to jump head first into the game.

Breaking It Down

Because Mobius Final Fantasy was originally designed for mobile devices, its gameplay mechanics are similar to that of other mobile games. This includes tap-based combat, swipeable menus, auto-combat, linear progression, and a stamina system. Don’t let the auto-combat throw you off though. Honestly, the auto-combat system in Mobius sucks. It’s only useful for taking care of lesser mobs and minions but for boss battles, where timing and strategy comes into play, turning off the autopilot works much better. Knowing when to throw a Blizzaga against a fire elemental, for example, and when to save it for when they “Break” will save you a lot of phoenix downs, which are in very short supply in the game.

Classes, Cards, and Orbs

Each one of the Final Fantasy games has a slightly different way of handling magic and abilities. FFVII had materia, FFVIII had the draw system, and the latest release, FFXV, has crafting. Mobius Final Fantasy uses cards. Players rely on cards for spells and abilities that they can use in battle. They can have up to four cards in their deck, plus an additional card that they can “rent” from a random list of players shown just before a battle.

The cards that players can use depend on their class. Players can switch between any of the three classes any time outside of battle but they can only use cards made for their class, including rented ones. While it’s possible to place a different class card in your deck, you won’t be able to use it in battle. You can, however, earn the Skillseeds that come with it. Skillseeds are used to unlock passive abilities and advance a specific class, with each class requiring more of a certain kind. Onion Knights, for example, require more Fire Skillseeds, while Mages, require more Water.

Card abilities also require Elemental Orbs to be usable in battle. Players start battles with no Elemental Orbs and draw random types and amounts of orbs by hitting the enemy with normal attacks. Once they have enough orbs, they can then trigger the card ability not unlike the mana system used by trading card games.

Taking Down Ifrit And The Gang

The multiplayer aspect of Mobius, called Ring of the Braves, is unlocked once you gain access to the World Map, along with a bunch of other game modes. Unlocking the World Map takes about 2-3 hours if you’re fast. Ring of the Braves is a PvE Co-op mode where a party of four players works together to take on iconic Final Fantasy bosses, including Ifrit, Shiva, and Odin. Successfully defeating the boss rewards players with rare items that they can use to upgrade their existing cards. Matches are turn-based and easy to win, as long as you have the right party. Read as: the strongest mofos around. Luckily for me, that’s exactly what I got my first time in the Ring.

Item Shop

Like most free-to-play mobile games, Mobius Final Fantasy makes use of a microtransaction-based business model. Players can purchase Magicite using real world money, which they can then exchange for items, cards, and regular game currency. Alternatively, a small amount of Magicite can be collected in-game every 16 hours. This gives F2P players a chance to buy the items that they need without spending a dime. This is a nice touch on Square Enix’s part and makes the game pay-for-convenience rather than pay-to-win.

The Final Verdict – Great

In spite of its high production value, Mobius Final Fantasy is at its core a mobile game and comes with the drawbacks that come with other mobile games, including an interface and gameplay designed for use on touchscreens. That’s not to say that the game isn’t good. In fact, it’s great, and one of the best mobile ports I’ve played in a while. There is, however, a lot of grinding involved, especially if you want to roll with the big leagues. Overall, Mobius Final Fantasy is a great choice for anyone looking for a fun and addictive casual game to pass the time.

Development History / Background:

Mobius Final Fantasy is a 3D multiplatform MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix. The initial concept was to create a mobile game comparable with console gaming, filling the gap in the market between the two systems. Setting itself apart from other mobile FF games such as Final Fantasy Record Keeper and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Mobius features a full-fledged story and world comparable to the series' main entries. Development began on the game in 2013 using the Unity game engine with a small team on a budget much lower than its console equivalents, and was released in Japan on June 4, 2015. The game registered over two million players within its first few weeks and received an award for iTunes Best of 2015 in Japan. It was released globally on August 3, 2016 and is continually updated with episodic content, each chapter released unveiling new storyline elements.

Mobius Final Fantasy launched on PC via Steam on February 5, 2017. The PC version supports HD textures and up to 4K resolution with 60 FPS support.
