Overview

StarCraft Universe Overview

StarCraft Universe is a custom map for StarCraft II that focuses on recreating World of Warcraft's raid experiences in a StarCraft setting. It is notable for its long development time and crowd-funded creators, using Kickstarter and Indiegogo to support their entirely free game endeavor, which is available through StarCraft II's arcade with SC2 Starter Edition. Play the game as one of many classes that come from the original SC2 universe, including Dark Templar, Preserver, Firebat, and more, each with their own distinct abilities and roles. Fight off hordes of enemies in third person action-RPG combat and team up with friends to take on difficult bosses, inspired by the raiding of World of Warcraft. Play through the game's quests that offer an alternate universe of the story after Wings of Liberty's conclusion—if Kerrigan met a grim fate and did not stop the hybrid's assault on the Protoss.

StarCraft Universe Key Features:

  • WoW-inspired MMORPG – fight hordes of enemies from a third-person perspective, activating an array of abilities using your skill bar.
  • Completely Free to Play due to Blizzard's terms of usage, the game has zero premium content and is 100% free to play.
  • Distinct Character Abilities play as one of the varied races that draw from units in SC2 such as Dark Templar, Preserver, and more, and use their abilities to damage foes and support allies.
  • StarCraft II Universe – view the StarCraft world from a new angle as if Kerrigan had never stopped the hybrid assault, leading to the struggle and downfall of the Protoss.
  • High Production Values – the game offers a brand new, highly detailed opening cinematic, and quality voice-acted characters throughout the game.

Development History / Background:

StarCraft Universe is developed and published by Upheaval Arts, spawned from two separate projects with the StarCraft II engine that began over five years ago, both titled World of Starcraft. Eventually the two projects merged and the developers began working together to create a full game using the StarCraft II Editor, rather than just a SC2 mod. The project first became notable after catching the media's attention when its pre-alpha trailer was removed from Youtube based on a cease and desist notice issued by Activision. Its development was not halted, however, as Blizzard was only protecting its trademark ownership of the title World of StarCraft and was not interested in stopping the creators.

The game was renamed to Universe, and went to Kickstarter on August 11, 2013 seeking funding to support its team with a goal of $80,000. The game was successfully funded on September 10, 2013 with a total of $84,918. An open alpha was released on January 27, 2014, which closed down on October 12, 2015. The developers launched open beta on July 27, 2016 and announced that the game would be ready for a full release within a month. The open beta servers are available through the StarCraft II arcade, which can be accessed by downloading the SC2 game using the Battle.net client.

The mod was abandoned sometime in 2018 with the official website no longer available and social media accounts left without updates.
