TBS Will Broadcast eSports in 2016

eSports-banner

TBS is breaking into the eSports industry, announcing 20 live events to be aired in 2016 ("Very Funny"). The broadcasting network must have been reading analytics firm Newzoo's reports and wants a piece of the projected $278 million competitive gaming industry. Who is TBS hoping to reach? The majority of eSports viewers already tune in through streaming services such as Twitch. What incentive is there to leave the keyboard behind for the TV, with program interrupted by advertisements for toothpaste and Zoloft? I can't remember the last time I voluntarily watched TV.

But Turner Broadcasting is not the first television network to host eSports events. ESPN 2 recently aired a college-geared Heroes of the Storm tournament, aptly titled "Heroes of the Dorm." Newzoo's report estimates that 47.7 million people tune in to eSports competitions, but they watch on their computers. And ESPN didn't break the ratings charts, contrarily the tournament did poorly according to Nielsen ratings.

Regardless, TBS is taking a risk and making fairly large push to be the network hosting competitive gaming. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is just one game slated to appear in a new facility built for eSports. Turner Sports president Lenny Daniels stated “eSports is one of the fastest growing entertainment genres among young adults around the world,” and he's certainly not wrong. The televised competitions are slated to begin in 2016. Whether or not it brings eSports away from streaming services or ends up being thedeath knell for TBS's dreams remains to be seen.

WildStar Free To Play Beta Open To All

wildstar-banner

WildStar: Reloaded's closed beta is no longer closed off, but open to everyone who downloads the test server client (download link at the bottom). The free to play relaunch isn't officially starting until September 29, at 12:01 A.M. EDT, on the dot. The WildStar Twitch page has a timer for eager players, with a surprisingly active chat log to pass the time.

The flood gates have been opened due to some technical difficulties regarding beta keys. According to a post made by WildStar's community manager on the forums, "We’re aware that there are some people experiencing issues with their beta keys expiring. Upon further investigation we’ve decided to remove the need for them altogether." While the news hasn't been spread far and wide yet, I can only imagine that the PTR is likely to fill up rather quickly so if you're curious about WildStar I suggest jumping in as soon as possible.

Real-Money Betting Mobile Games Brought To You By Playboy and Gamblit Gaming

playboy-now-banner

In a cooperative-tactical move I never would have guessed, Gamblit Gaming and Playboy have joined forces to bring real money betting to the competitive mobile game market. Playboy and Gamblit Gaming will develop competitive games together that incorporates betting into their gameplay, to be released some time in 2016. Since the games require skill and not luck, the gambling den won't fall under regulatory edicts.

California-based Gamblit Gaming is known for making games that incorporate gambling, such as Dreadnought for iOS. But none of their titles have brought the studio much success, a seemingly odd choice for a company with a reported annual revenue of $135 million. Although Playboy's earnings did drop dramatically from 2009, a reported $240 million. Perhaps entering into a partnership is a means for Playboy to expand their horizons and capitalize on competitive mobile gaming while the industry is still blooming—an estimated $30 billion within a few years. And Gamblit Gaming is one of the few companies that builds games with gambling in mind.

The games will be developed for the United Kingdom as well as land-based casinos in the Unites States, such as Las Vegas.

Sword Coast Legends Delayed Until October 20th

Sword-Coast-Legends-delay-

Developers N-Space and Digital Extremes announced that the Dungeons & Dragons game Sword Coast Legends is delayed until October 20th. Originally, the game was scheduled to release on September 08, then it was initially delayed for September 29, and now—hopefully—the final release date is solidified. It will release for PC, Linux, and Mac concurrently with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release scheduled for some time in Q1 2016.

Sword Coast Legend's Director Dan Tudge stated, "The decision to delay the launch of Sword Coast Legends was not an easy one to make, but after receiving feedback from our dedicated community, it became clear that a few more weeks of polish would provide our customers with the best possible experience at launch."

To make up for the delay all players who pre-ordered the game will receive the first DLC, Rage of Demons, for free along with access to upcoming Head Start access.

Read the official announcement on the Sword Coast Legends website and pre-order the game on Steam.

New Adventure Time Game Is Set In Virtual Reality

Cartoon Network has released an Adventure Time game for the Samsung Gear VR. Titled Adventure Time: Magic Man's Head Games, the 3D platformer is the first VR game based on the TV show. If I had a Gear VR I wouldn't be typing this but I would be getting Mathematical! While the release is currently only available for Samsung Gear VR, Cartoon Network general manager Christina Fallon stated the company is looking at the possibility of releasing on other platforms.

Previously Adult Swim created The Virtual Brainload VR project for Google Glass, an acid-trip of colors and sounds that lets expierencers "gaze in awe at the backside of reality." Head to Adult Swim's VR site or the Google Play Store to download it, if you've constructed your cardboard VR.

Venus Rising Enters Closed Beta

venus-rising-adult-mmo

Adult-oriented MMO Venus Rising has entered closed beta. Made by FOXYSOFT, the Roman-stylized game incorporates all the classic elements of MMORPG's and throws "the added element of sexual abilities." Venus Rising seems to be a game designed for Bob Guccione mirroring his 1979 historical drama Caligula. The first phase of testing will allow 500 players to explore the promiscuous world, that features graphics closely resembling Second Life.

Free to play players will be able to pay $10 to unlock special features; features that only the imagination could possibly conjure (probably a bigger bathhouse).

For mythology lovers Venus is the Roman incarnation of the Greek deity Aphrodite. She is the goddess of love, sex, beauty, and fertility—and deviating from her Greek counterpart also became the goddess of fertility, victory, and prostitutes. It's undoubtedly an apt title for a game that promises buxom cleavage and uncensored nudity like an episode of Spartacus.

Interested players can sign up for the beta by visiting Venus Rising's website. But you must be 18 or over to make an account.

Archlord 2 Shutting Down

farewell-archlord-2

Webzen has announced the closure of Archlord 2, officially shutting down on Novemeber 24, 2015. The free to play fantasy themed game heavily emphasized PvP gameplay and was fairly successful. The farewell address from Webzen highlights some of the impressive statistics the game garnered, such as "300,000 players have logged on to Archlord 2 for a combined total of over 5 million hours... of play-time."

While no specific reason for the game's closure was given Webzen will be adding a number of buffs and all in-game shop items will be reduced to 0 Wcoin—essentially the Viking funeral rights for an MMOs closure, such as Moonrise.

Archlord 2 may be turning their servers off but perhaps the move was made to focus on ASTA Online and the recently announced Western release of Elite Lord of Alliance (Perhaps the money used to run Archlord 2's servers will be redistributed to the legal department in an effort to combat Game Release Entertainment's Inspirit Online).

For the official farewell address head to Archlord 2's announcement page.
