The Weekly Raid: Is Gambling The Future Of eSports?

What do I mean by this nebulous clickbait weekly raid statement? What I mean is, will gambling and placing bets be an intricate part of the future of eSports, will it add to eSport's successs, and without it can eSports succeed?

Why are we talking about this? Well, Wargaming’s Mohamed Fadl recently said (and eloquently so), β€œyou’re stupid to say betting is bad,” in regards to gambling and World of Tanks. And I'm struggling to disagree with him. Like it or not, an activity like gambling is going to happen whether its sanctioned or otherwise. And while I don't care about wagering my slave-wage, I know plenty of people who do.

Is gambling the future of eSports? Let us know in the comments below!

From Mega Man II to Ape Escape, I've been playing games for as long as I can remember. I've spent months killing porings in Ragnarok Online and more recently lived a second life in Eve Online. I usually play as gUMBY, gUMBLEoni, or gUMBLes in-game.

  • I'm a big fan of betting on Esports. Even if its $5 or something small - it makes me more excited about the matches. I usually bet on the mega underdogs so it gets mega hype for me when it gets close πŸ˜€

I don't bet on Esports games myself, but I like to go to the betting sites and look at the odds, make a mental note, choose my winner and then feel all proud if they win: "Ha ! I so could have won Β£20 if I had put money down...." ... So why didn't I?

Even if gambling isn't the future then it is definitely going to remain a significant part of the Esports scene.
