The Weekly Raid: Does Being A Leader In An MMO Translate To Everyday Life?

If you've joined a guild you've probably dealt with a guild leader, and many guild leaders—at least in my experience—have embodied similar personality traits. And so I'm wondering if people who become leaders in MMOs are also leaders in their everyday life: a Commander in Natural Selection 2, a raid leader in World of Warcraft, a corporation manger in EVE Online become entrepreneurs or managers or burlesque madams.

Maybe MMOs could be looked at as training grounds for leaders-to-be: a 16 year old who forms a MapleStory guild goes on to become president, still keeping the same lessons they learned from their time gaming (yelling means your right).

Or, is there something particular about MMOs that lets people be leaders who otherwise wouldn't? Does the limited sense of anonymity motivate players to obtain power, or interact with others in ways they wouldn't outside of a game?

I'm guessing it's a bit of both.

From Mega Man II to Ape Escape, I've been playing games for as long as I can remember. I've spent months killing porings in Ragnarok Online and more recently lived a second life in Eve Online. I usually play as gUMBY, gUMBLEoni, or gUMBLes in-game.
