The Weekly Raid: Will Cryptocoins Find Their Way Into MMOs?

The last few months of 2017 were ablaze with Crypto news. We even saw a few projects reltaed to gaming. Both Neverdie coins and Crycash hope to integrate into multiple games and promise to reward gamers for their time investment.

While neither of these projects has gained much traction, the crypto mining craze continues to cause GPU shortages worldwide. The price of Nvidia 1070 and 1080s are far higher on secondary markets today than the MSRP advertised by retailers. RAM prices are even more elevated.

While we're all busy getting rich flipping Etherium, Litecoin, and fraction-of-a-penny shitcoins, its worth considering whether this technology actually has some real use. I sincerely doubt cryptocoins will replace real world currencies, but they do have a chance of serving as a multi-universe coin among a variety of MMORPGs. Big studios like Nexon that service multiple games often have a shared premium currency. I don't see why a cryptocoin players can earn in-game or by doing services online couldn't replace current system.

Lifelong gamer always looking for the next virtual adventure. I'm still waiting for the next big MMORPG. Until then, you can find me hopping between multiple games.
