The Weekly Raid: Will Cryptocoins Find Their Way Into MMOs?

The last few months of 2017 were ablaze with Crypto news. We even saw a few projects reltaed to gaming. Both Neverdie coins and Crycash hope to integrate into multiple games and promise to reward gamers for their time investment.

While neither of these projects has gained much traction, the crypto mining craze continues to cause GPU shortages worldwide. The price of Nvidia 1070 and 1080s are far higher on secondary markets today than the MSRP advertised by retailers. RAM prices are even more elevated.

While we're all busy getting rich flipping Etherium, Litecoin, and fraction-of-a-penny shitcoins, its worth considering whether this technology actually has some real use. I sincerely doubt cryptocoins will replace real world currencies, but they do have a chance of serving as a multi-universe coin among a variety of MMORPGs. Big studios like Nexon that service multiple games often have a shared premium currency. I don't see why a cryptocoin players can earn in-game or by doing services online couldn't replace current system.

Lifelong gamer always looking for the next virtual adventure. I'm still waiting for the next big MMORPG. Until then, you can find me hopping between multiple games.

Oh wow I missed the Neverdie one. With that guy's record it's bound to be a success.
Currently I'm in on EnjinCoin. They're making it work for Minecraft and Ark.

  • I'm not optimistic on these. I don't think they'll add any actual value to either the developer or the player. Some of the stuff listed on GameCredits (200M+ market cap wtf) detract value, not add value.

I hope they don't, games should encourage players to put effort in order to achieve things, not buy them just like that.

The only option I would agree with, is if they somehow make it so when people play the game (ACTIVELY!, not using bots, AFKing or whatever) to somehow earn small bits of the currency. As long as people don't find a way to exploit this, it can be a win-win situation.
