Activision Blizzard Reports Most Profitable Quarter Ever

Surprise Surprise, Activsion Blizzard is REALLY good at making money. The company reported its most profitable quarter ever today with profit hitting $426 million for the 3 months ended March 31, 2017. Revenue came in at a record as well at $1.73 billion. Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, attributed the strong quarter to the success of Overwatch, which now has over 30 million players world-wide. Blizzard seems to be carrying most of the growth at the company with Activision and King Digital showing year over year decline in monthly active users.

Other Interesting Data:

  • Blizzard hit 41 million monthly active users, a Q1 record. (Up 58% year-over-year)
  • Hearthstone's monthly active users grew year over year and quarter over quarter as well despite no content releases in the quarter (Journey to Un'Goro launched in April)
  • Hearthstone hit an all time high in Daily Active Users after Journey to Un'Goro launched
  • Blizzard's revenues from In-game content increased 25% year over year, thanks to the growth in revenues from World of Warcraft (cash shop) and Overwatch (loot boxes).
  • Ativision had 48 million monthly active users this quarter, down year over year due to the weakness of Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.
  • King Digital (Think Candy Crush) had 342 million monthly active users, down year over year.
