Update: It has since been announced that player run servers are not happening. It remains to be seen whether the community can or will step in and create a private server of their own.

When Turbine announced yesterday that it was handing off both Dungeons and Dragons Online and The Lord of the Rings Online to an indie studio made up of the teams behind both games, but failed to mention Asheron's Call, fans of the aging MMORPG were understandably worried. Their MMO of choice for 17 years shares hardware with The Lord of the Rings Online and either Standing Stone Games would have to announce that it had taken control of Asheron's Call, as well, or a costly move to new hardware would be necessary in order for the game to stay running.

Unfortunately, today, it was announced that neither of those routes were taken. Instead, Asheron's Call and its bundled sequel will come to an end on January 31st, 2017.

Fans are understandably furious. Private server software has been discussed for years now, but never came to fruition. One user writes "Thanks for nothing except lies and silence Sev." Another user states the following.

Severlin will go down as the biggest, lying pos developer in gaming history if he doesn't live up to his promise and release the private server before they shut down.

It remains to be seen whether the community will take it upon themselves to create a private server for Asheron's Call and/or its sequel, but this may very well go down as one of the biggest betrayals in MMORPG history regardless. As one user puts it, "Merry ****ing Christmas."
