Clockwork Labs Reveals Bitcraft, a New Community Sandbox MMORPG

Clockwork Labs, a fully remote game development studio, revealed their first project today titled Bitcraft which bills itself as a "community sandbox MMORPG". The game is highly ambitious and promises a level of freedom for players not seen in any modern MMORPG as it looks to mix sandbox survival/crafting elements with MMORPGs. The game's "pre-alpha" begins this fall with registrations open now.

In BitCraft, players can create their own legend as solo adventurers or work together with others to build a new civilization in a single, editable wilderness with an ancient past.

“BitCraft is an MMO community sandbox game which takes place in an enormous, fully editable, procedurally generated landscape all hosted in a single unsharded world, providing players with an unparalleled level of creativity and depth,” said Tyler Cloutier, co-founder of Clockwork Labs. “It’s a game that puts emphasis on cooperation over combat within our ever-expanding world, a core value of our gaming ethos at Clockwork Labs.”

While we're normally highly skeptical about any highly ambitious MMORPG, especially one from an unknown studio, the folks behind Bitcraft, Clockwork Labs, seem to be backed by a reputable roster of firms including Supercell, Firstminute Capital, Skycatcher, 1Up Ventures, and Supernode. So they at least have the funding to make something serious.

While the announcement trailer doesn't seem to show any gameplay, it seems to be rendered using in-game graphics and shows off some exploration elements. Bitcraft is launching on PC first followed by other platforms.
