Elder Scrolls Online Players Say Account-Wide Achievements Will Ruin Replayability

While ZeniMax’ plans to make achievements account-wide in Elder Scrolls Online is old news, yesterday’s Update 33 preview has apparently riled up some players. As is the norm, those players have voiced their disapproval on the official forums and Reddit citing the negative effects the change will have on the game’s replayability, particularly on alt characters and how it will devaluate hard-earned titles.

Most of the community, however, seems to be on-board with the plan if a bit cautious. There are suggestions to make account-wide achievements an opt-in feature to preserve individual character achievements, which could be an option for ZeniMax considering that other MMOs with account-wide achievements, perks, and stats have already done this in some form.

The dev team addressed the community’s concerns in a Q&A post saying that account-wide achievements is not only one of the most-requested features but will also help to improve the game’s overall database health and performance. They also maintained that they will not be making it an opt-in feature but they won’t be scrubbing achievements entirely either.

“Completed achievements will display the name of the character that first completed the achievement, as well as the date it was first completed. The initial account achievement merging process takes this into account and will auto-update the achievement to display the earliest completion date and character.” they explained.

“Tracking individual character progression nullifies the database improvements that Account Wide Achievements bring and isn’t something we can implement without losing those benefits,” the team added.

You can check out the full Q&A on the Elder Scrolls Online official forums to learn more about account-wide achievements and ZeniMax’ plans to implement it.

Update 33 is scheduled for release alongside the Ascending Tide DLC on March 14th on PC/Mac and Google Stadia and on March 29th on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
