It’s no secret that CCP Games and Pearl Abyss are planning to incorporate blockchain technology and NFTs into their games, including EVE Online, sometime in the future. This was further confirmed when CCP Games retweeted a photograph of the studio’s CEO Hilmar Petursson together with blockchain entrepreneurs at GDC last month.

The photo was promptly taken down following massive backlash from the community. Petursson addressed the community’s concerns about blockchain technology in a recent statement in hopes of putting a stop to speculations regarding the matter. In his statement, the CEO assures the community that while blockchain technology offers a well of “untapped potential,” there are currently no plans to incorporate the tech into EVE Online’s live Tranquility server.

“We have no plans to add blockchain technology into EVE Online’s global server Tranquility for the foreseeable future. […] While we remain intrigued by the technology, for us, NFT stands for ‘Not for Tranquility.’ Overall the EVE IP will continue to push the boundaries of digital economies and virtual worlds – and we will continue to explore that outside of TQ.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plans to open a new NFT or play-to-earn server in the future. The question is when. We’ll let you know as soon as word comes out.

In the meantime, CCP Games is gearing up for the first in-person EVE Fanfest event in over two years. The event will kick off in the studio’s home country of Iceland on May 2nd. Tickets are still on sale on the EVE Online official site.
