German video game company Gameforge (Aion, Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Dropzone, HEX, & More) has announced they are leaving mobile gaming behind; and they laid off a fifth of their staff as a result. According to Gamasutra, Gameforge founder and CEO Alexander Rösner stated that the free-to-play PC market has "interesting opportunities."

What an interesting twist.

When most companies are doubling down efforts on developing hit mobile games, Gameforge has decided it's best to swim against the tide.

It seems to me that Gameforge realized developing mobile titles is difficult, not because of the cost but because there is too much competition. It's difficult to make your game stand out against thousands of others.

I wonder if we will see other companies make similar decisions in the coming months.
