If you’re currently enjoying Diablo 4 but want to dive deeper into the game’s lore, then Blizzard has your back. The studio has just kicked off its new Tales of Sanctuary short story series with two new tales set in the Diablo universe that expands the existing lore while bringing back familiar characters from the ARPG franchise.

Both stories – “Witness” by Alma Katsu and “The Toll of Darkness and Light” by Jonathan Maberry – are available on the Blizzard official site as downloadable PDFs. Each story spans over 20 pages, which is worth a read for those looking to take a break from battling Lilith’s demon army.

In “Witness” Katsu takes readers on a journey alongside Tejal, a member of the Hedaji, a sacred order of scribes. Tejal’s role involves documenting heroic feats and capturing powerful moments within artifacts. However, her ordinary routine takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious man with a sinister gaze enters her parlor. This encounter invokes memories of endless bloodshed from Tejal’s past to the violent day that set her on her current path.

“The Toll of Darkness and Light” is intertwined with the first story and is told from the perspective of Tejal. The focus shifts to Klath-Ulna, also known as the Golden One, a figure who travels from town to town exacting vengeance on the Zakarum and acquiring church bells to forge his magnificent armor. During a visit to the town of Saint's Calling, Klath-Ulna senses a connection to his brother within a young paladin-in-training, who stands as the lone survivor.

The Tales of Sanctuary series offers an engaging opportunity for Diablo 4 players to explore the depths of the game’s lore and immerse themselves in the series’ rich narrative. Blizzard promises more “delightfully dark” stories coming soon, so stay tuned.
