The shuffling of studio ownership in the gaming industry continues as Improbable sells Midwinter Entertainment to Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive less than three years after they bought the studio. Midwinter is the second studio that Improbable has sold this year as it shifts its focus away from traditional video game development and towards the creation of their own metaverse.

Following the sale, Midwinter’s PvPvE shooter, Scavengers, will essentially transition into maintenance mode with a small internal team being left behind to keep it running. The promised console version, however, has now been cancelled.

“As part of our announced focus on the metaverse Improbable announced the divestment of its non metaverse focused content teams at the start of the year,” Improbable CEO Herman Narula told Eurogamer. “We are really excited to have found partners who we believe can provide a fantastic home for the Midwinter team.”

“We are very pleased to see Midwinter go with Behaviour, both for the common ambition they have, and for the cultural fit we have observed all along our discussions. The work done by the Midwinter team over the past three years has been phenomenal and we wish this team all the very best and will be looking forward to seeing their upcoming projects come to life,” Narula added.

Improbable also sold their stake in Aaryn Flynn’s Inflexion Games to Tencent back in February but Inflexion retained the rights to their in-development fantasy survival game, Nightingale. The game was initially designed to run with SpatialOS but has now been rebuilt without Improbable’s proprietary cloud computing technology.
