Last Oasis Is Revamping Walker Building With A New Hardpoint System

Since Donkey Crew came out of hibernation last month, the studio has been pushing out a steady stream of dev blogs. Their latest one talks about their plans to introduce a new hardpoint system for Walkers to improve the PvP experience on board the wooden mobile fortresses.

Currently, players are able to place objects anywhere on the Walkers which allows players to get creative with how they build them. Unfortunately, this made melee combat and boarding enemy walkers an awkward affair especially when the opposing player has built up a wall of items to protect vital parts of the Walker.

“Melee combat is a massive feature of the game, the same as Walkers, yet both things don’t usually go hand in hand or work together very well,” said Donkey Crew. “Boarding enemy Walkers, fighting swinging with grappling hooks from the wings and onto Walker decks is a lot of fun, but most of the time you’re always getting stuck with something, either someone decided to build 50 flags around their Steering Levers, or they just really love campfires, there’s always something that makes the boarding action a lot more awkward and less fun, and that’s something we wanted to tackle from the start.”

To address this, the studio will be removing free item placement and adding set “hardpoints” where players will be able to place items. Each Walker will come with pre-designed hardpoints depending on their class, deck space, and layout. They come in five different categories which determine they type of items that can be placed on them: Small, Medium, Large, Edge, and Decorative.

“Regardless of the rig the Walker is equipped with, each hardpoint allows the placement of only one object, regardless of the size,” the devs explained. “All hardpoints are backwards-compatible, though, so this means a small structure can be built in Medium and Large hardpoints.”

“Although each Walker will come with a base rig installed by default, there will be ways to upgrade the rigs, change them around, etc. Rigs themselves will be part of the new loot, and a tradeable item in the game,” they added.

The new Walker hardpoint system will be up for testing soon. Details can be found on the Last Oasis Steam page.
