After months of hibernation, Last Oasis developer Donkey Crew reemerged with an update on what they’ve been up to over the past few months. The team had apparently been working to address major issues in the game and cleaned up the code to give them a more stable platform to build on. They also added new tools to allow them quickly add new content and tweak existing ones.

Donkey Crew follows up on that update with a new dev blog that talks about planned changes to one of the survival MMORPG’s core features – Walkers. The mobile fortresses will be getting a major balance pass including adjustments to ammo progression and a full rework of the armor rating system.

“We have completely reworked the armor ratings and damage types system into a much more straightforward and intuitive version,” said the devs. “[…] A lot of old design decisions have been overturned in favor of following our new direction for the game - the upcoming changes to siege weapons, base raiding and Walker combat balance are no exception,” said the devs.”

Armor types will be categorized into five tiers while damage types will be divided into four. The revamped system is designed to make armor and ammo progression more linear and ensure that they don’t get outclassed as soon as a newer weapon or armor comes along.

Walkers will also be getting new dart-shooting remote-controlled defensive weapons called Stingers along with new mechanical Automaton assistants to help man weapons that would otherwise need to be controlled by another player.

“Fundamentally, our ranged weapons are either remote weapons controlled by the Walker pilot, like Stingers and the old Remote Ballista, or mannable siege weapons controlled by a player gunner,” the devs explained. “Automata are an attachment which allows Walker pilots to turn every mannable into a remote weapon (or tool) that can be controlled from the Steering Levers of a Walker. They are meant to enhance the role of a Walker pilot during PvP and PvE engagements through more remotely controlled tools and options.”

According to the developers, the addition of Automata should open up possibilities for new gameplay mechanics and new weapon types such as one that can disable enemy Automata.

The above-mentioned changes and new features are expected to land with the start of Season 5. The update is now live on the public test server for those who want to check it out.
