Mythyn Interactive announced yesterday that its Ultima Online-inspired MMORPG Linkrealms will be going free-to-play on October 10th. At that time, all users will be given "access to the full range of skills, locations and events the game has to offer" regardless of whether they have put any money into the game or not.

According to the press release, Mythyn's reason for going free-to-play now is as follows.

The pivotal decision has been taken as Mythyn Interactive has judged that Linkrealms is finally ready to welcome a larger userbase. This is to be credited to the recent introduction of the criminal and newcomer protection systems, the revision of combat balancing and the improvement of server stability.

Considering Linkrealms' 24-hour peak of 0 concurrent players, I'm inclined to say that the move to a free-to-play model couldn't come soon enough. The game was previously in alternating states of Closed Beta and Open Beta for several years before being significantly revamped. After the revamp, it launched on Steam Early Access in May with a $19.99 price tag, where it has failed to garner a community, having had an all-time peak of 46 concurrent users. Perhaps the move to a free-to-play model will help the game find its community.
