MapleStory 2 Shutting Down on May 27

Nexon announced today that MapleStory 2 will be shutting down on May 27, 2020 after launching in October, 2018. The game's demise shouldn't be too surprising as its playerbase on Steam has been falling steadily every month since launch.

Despite the game's closure, the original MapleStory remains open and according to Nexon, is actually thriving. Maplestory hit an all time peak in revenue last quarter, despite being 15 years old.

I'm sad to see the game go, as it had a unique emphasis on non-combat elements like minigames, player housing, and player created costumes / music. Unfortunately, despite its strength in this department, MapleStory 2's biggest weakness was its core gameplay loop, which proved fatal to the game both in South Korea and now world-wide.

The sun is setting in Maple World, and to celebrate the legacy of the game, the MapleStory 2 team wanted to make a few meaningful changes for anyone who wants to enjoy their remaining time here. We're immensely thankful for the support and feedback over the last year and a half, and hope that everyone is able to take at least one positive memory with them from our game. Starting after the maintenance on March 18th, a number of events will begin to help support anyone who wishes to play or try out MapleStory 2 in the final two months.

Duration: March 18th, After Maintenance - May 27th, Service Closure
