Marvel Snap’s publisher, Nuverse, is shutting down as its parent company decides to completely abandon its video game aspirations. The publisher is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company best known as the creator of TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin.

Nuverse is now winding down all video game-related projects and will be ending support for operational games like Marvel Snap, One Piece: The Voyage, and Crystal of Atland by December. Hundreds of employees will be affected by the studio’s closure and were given the unfortunate news over the weekend.

The closure comes just two months after Forbes named Marvel Snap as the top-grossing digital card game in September, earning over $100 million and far outpacing Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, and Magic: The Gathering.

Naturally, this has caused concern among Marvel Snap’s community. Developer Second Dinner, however, was quick to assure players that the game will remain operational. “We wish to thank you for your concern and assure you that regardless of any changes at Nuverse, Snap will continue to operate and flourish in the future,” tweeted the studio. “Thank you and happy Snapping!”

It’s worth noting that Second Dinner received a sizable investment from NetEase when Hearthstone’s Ben Brode founded the studio back in 2019. As such, it’s highly likely that NetEase will be scooping up the game and will be publishing the game themselves once Nuverse officially shuts down.
