Runescape Classic Shutting Down on August 6th

Jagex announced earlier this week that Runescape classic will be shutting down on August 6th, 2018 due to the fact that their existing technology doesn't support it anymore. Jagex's anti-cheating efforts and tools are compatible with Oldschool RuneScape and RuneScape, but apparently don't work for the Classic version of the game, which led to some serious exploits and other issues. The servers will go offline on August 6th at 8AM BST for good.

“We’ve not fully supported RuneScape Classic for years, so why are we suddenly seeing it as a problem now? The truth is that bots and lack of community safety tools are serious problems, however, we also feel that we can no longer offer long term service reliability due to the growing risk of unrecoverable game breaking bugs.

The number of bugs is getting worse, and we’re gradually seeing the game breaking. It’s important to highlight that these are bugs which we can’t fix due to the unsupported nature of the game.”

This shutdown won't have any effect on Runescape or Oldschool Runescape, just Runescape Classic. Classic was the first version of the game and it launched back in 2001. While it's always sad to see it go, Runescape as a game continues to thrive. Oldschool Runescape and Runescape are still amongst the most played MMORPGs in the West, regularly boasting over 50k concurrent users.
