In today’s age of free-to-play games and microtransactions, Star Vault has decided to monetize Mortal Online 2 the old-fashioned way with a monthly subscription. The persistent sandbox MMORPG is currently buy-to-play but will soon be making the switch to a subscription model now that players have had a few months to get settled since the game’s official launch on Steam.

Star Vault’s decision to go with a monthly sub isn’t exactly news either as the studio had revealed as much prior to the game’s full release and had even implemented subs for a short while after launch. According to the developers, simply having players subscribe to the game and not have to create microtransactions or premium cosmetics will allow them to focus on creating new content and improving the game itself.

“With a subscription model, we can ensure every player experiences the game on equal terms, as well as allowing us to continue developing the game and adding new content for many, many years to come. All without sacrificing or lowering the integrity of the game world and its player base,” Star Vault explained.

A subscription model will also allow the team to create and release cosmetic items that players will be able to craft themselves without gaining undue advantages over other players. “In Mortal Online 2 you can be confident that anything you see another player wearing or holding can be crafted or found within the world organically, and that no players have any advantages they paid real money for,” the studio said.

The good news is that Star Vault still wouldn’t say when it will be making the switch. Until then, players who’ve already bought the game will still be able to play completely subscription-free.
