Neopets Owner NetDragon Faces Potential Class Action Lawsuit For Last Year’s Data Breach

Last summer, Tamagotchi-like virtual pet website Neopets suffered a massive data breach that gave a hacker access to the personal information of over 69 million users. The leaked data included names, email addresses, and passwords which the hacker later offered to sell for $100,000 worth of Bitcoin.

While the issue had seemingly blown over with time, it looks like it’s come back to bite NetDragon in the behind. NetDragon, the owner of Neopets operator Jumpstart Games, is now facing a potential class action lawsuit for the data breach which was initially filed by Biankha Negrin. The plaintiff claims that she was unaware that the company still had her information on file and only found out about the breach weeks after the fact.

The lawsuit claims that NetDragon was negligent in ensuring the security of their users’ data even though they were “a sophisticated organization with the resources to deploy robust cybersecurity protocols.” Negrin’s lawyers are also petitioning the Central District Court of California to deem the complaint as a class-action lawsuit with the total amount of damages to be determined at a later date.
