Nexon is still stubbornly refusing to give up on its cryptocurrency dream despite losing $40 million to the Bitcoin crash in 2021 and losses that continued until Q4 2022. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) earlier this week, the studio unveiled a new NFT ecosystem called the MapleStory Universe which will serve as the backbone for MapleStory N and future NFT games based on the MapleStory IP.

The ecosystem will be tied to the Polygon Etherium platform and the NFTs themselves will be usable in within the MapleStory Universe and will offer various benefits and utilities. The good news is that you won’t have to spend a dime to acquire the NFTs which can be obtained by simply completing quests and hunting monsters, but there’ll be a limit to the number of NFT rewards available from each region in the game to create scarcity and, in theory, enhance their value.

Nexon’s GDC presentation, however, was more focused on their blockchain aspirations and their partnership with Polygon rather than MapleStory N itself so we’re still pretty much in the dark about what else it has to offer aside from being able to earn NFTs. The studio has also yet to announce a release window for the upcoming blockchain game.

We’ll keep you in the loop as soon as more information comes our way.
