Spellgear Goes Free-To-Play As Its Crafting System Goes Live

Are you looking for a free-to-play hardcore PvP MMORPG with both open PvP and MOBA-like arenas? Look no further, for Spellgear went free-to-play earlier this week. The game originally launched on Steam Early Access last August as a $20 buy-to-play game. However, based on its concurrent user numbers on SteamCharts, it's fairly obvious that that wasn't working for the game. Going free-to-play seems to be an attempt to get fresh blood into the game, as official Steam Early Access info panel simply says that there is "a distinct possibility" that the game will be priced differently after Early Access, which means that they weren't sure at the time. There is also the fact that no PvP-focused game will be worth playing if there's no one to fight.

Spellgear's free-to-play era is beginning alongside the introduction of the crafting system. It is note that this is the team's "first step in that direction," so I imagine that it will be fairly rudimentary, but it is in, nonetheless.

One of the major features that the developers tout is a unique battle system. Usually, when creating a unique system of any kind, it's not perfect the first time around and Spellgear is no exception. The team has made "huge changes" to the battle system based on user feedback, including "[expanding] tactical abilities to make them more dynamic, with added mobility."

The game's PvP systems also got a bit of a boost with the introduction of the clan system, which will make way to a future dynamic clan war. "Global domination" and global events have also been introduced, albeit no details about either were divulged in the patch notes.

You can find the full set of patch notes here.

Those interested in trying out Spellgear now that it is free-to-play can download the game here. If you previously purchased the game, you will be given "a very precious gift" as thanks for supporting the game early on.
