Star Citizen Developer Cloud Imperium Games Acquires Perpetual CryEngine License

star citizen directx vulcan bannerThere’s no hard feelings between Cloud Imperium Games and Crytek in spite of the two-year long legal battle between the two companies. The Star Citizen developer’s 2019 end-of-the-year financial report reveals that they’ve invested in a perpetual license to use Crytek’s CryEngine.

“During 2020, [Cloud Imperium Games] further strengthened its position as a AAA game developer by acquiring a perpetual license for CryEngine from game development platform provider Crytek GmBH, ensuring the business continues to be agile in developing its revolutionary technology.”

Crytek filed a lawsuit against Cloud Imperium Games in December 2017 for breach of contract and copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, Cloud Imperium allegedly used CryEngine to develop Squadron 42 without a separate license and also removed the CryEngine splash screen from Star Citizen which is a violation of the license terms. The two companies were locked in a legal battle of motions and counters for nearly two years until the judge ordered both sides to settle the matter through an alternative dispute resolution process.
