SuperData Releases Sept 2017 Digital Games Market Report

On October 25 SuperData, a gaming market intelligence group, released their monthly report on the state of the global digital games marketplace. September 2017 was another stellar month for digital gaming, with worldwide revenues growing 15% to reach $8.3 billion across console, mobile, and PC platforms.

Highlights from the report include a 25% jump in console digital revenue, largely due to the release of Destiny 2. Destiny 2 has set a launch record for digital console revenue, further evidence that console gamers are growing more comfortable with digital sales. Earlier this month, Electronic Arts predicted that 40% of console game sales would be digital downloads by the end of 2017.

On the PC front, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) moved up to 4th place, surpassing the big-in-China tactical shooter Crossfire. A bigger shock for me was the impressive performance of Divinity: Original Sin 2 which came in 8th place with 660,000 digital copies sold. SuperData doesn't provide revenue numbers, only rankings. Clever readers can use the retail price of Original Sin 2 to calculate what it takes to rank #8 on the list, and use that number to guide their estimates for the other games on the PC list.

The mobile top 10 was dominated by companies from East Asia (Japan, Korea, China) with only Activision Blizzard's Candy Crush Saga (#6) breaking the combo.
