theHunter is a beautiful game with great gameplay and systems that can keep you playing forever if you are so inclined. But its business model is divisive at best and the game is clearly beginning to age, having been on the market since early 2009. Enter theHunter: Call of the Wild, a modernized, buy-to-play version of the game that fans of the original and newcomers alike can enjoy.

Key features of theHunter: Call of the Wild include gorgeous new visuals, an open world spanning 50 square miles and several biomes, a single-player storyline, cooperative and competitive play for up to 8 players, a vast assortment of gear to use, and the same kind of realism that we've come to expect from theHunter series, by way of animal behavior, weather, ballistics, acoustics, "scents carried by a sophisticated wind system."

theHunter: Call of the Wild is now available on Steam for $29.99. Early reviews seem to indicate that, while some users are enjoying it, others are experiencing low framerates on high-end systems and game-breaking bugs, such as spawning outside of or even under the map and various unresponsive UI elements. One user also questioned the lack of any of the community-based competitive elements that theHunter Classic has, including leaderboards for the highest scoring confirmed kill for each type of animal and the option to share any information about or pictures of trophies. I have no doubt that the bugs and optimization issues will be solved in time, but bear in mind that it may very well be suffering some launch woes.
