Unity Company Lays Off Hundreds Of Employees Around The Globe

Unity game engine developer Unity Technologies has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees over the past month. According to VentureBeat, a total of 263 employees were affected by the series of layoffs as the company responds to a significant drop in revenue following Apple’s crackdown against target advertising in the past year.

A big chunk of the Unity Technologies’ revenue comes from Unity ads and the stricter measures to protect user privacy have made it harder for the company to acquire users through targeted ad campaigns. Facebook is apparently also in the same boat.

“As part of a continued planning process where we regularly assess our resourcing levels against our company priorities, we decided to realign some of our resources to better drive focus and support our long-term growth,” said Unity Technologies. “This resulted in some hard decisions that impacted approximately 4% of all Unity workforce. We are grateful for the contributions of those leaving Unity and we are supporting them through this difficult transition.”

On the subject of support, employees in the U.S. were reportedly given one month to look for employment elsewhere and a severance package of two weeks’ pay for every year they worked in the company and three months of health insurance coverage. Employees in Canada and Denmark were given more.
