Yahoo eSports Portal Shutting Down

The star that burns brightest also burns the briefest. After only 15 months or so since its inception, Yahoo's eSports portal will stop being updated after this Friday (June 16, 2017) according to a letter posted by Travis Gafford, Head of eSports Media at Yahoo eSports.

Unfortunately, Yahoo Esports will no longer be updated after this Friday (June 16th). As Yahoo Sports becomes part of Oath, they are focusing on aligning with the new company strategy and are focused on growing the Yahoo Sports brand.

The decision to shutter the portal was made by Yahoo's new corporate overlords at Verizon. The telco giant closed its $4.5 billion dollar buyout of Yahoo on June 13 and has already stated they are looking to cut up to 2,100 of the former internet giant's employees. With so many heads on the chopping block, expect other niche sites operated under the Yahoo umbrella to shutter in the coming weeks.

Looking past the novelty of a Yahoo eSports portal, the site was surprisingly well run. The staff had great write ups, the site was clean, and I found myself on there more often than I had expected I would.

With eSports set to grow exponetially in the next few years, perhaps Verizon is making a mistake. I wish the Yahoo eSports staff the best, and I believe they won't have trouble finding positions across the burgeoning eSports scene.
