MultiVersus Review

By, Aey Igh

MultiVersus, developed by Player First Games, is a free-to-play platform fighting game featuring iconic characters from various Warner Brothers franchises, such as Harley Quinn, Rick and Morty, Finn the Human, and more. Despite its engaging gameplay, diverse roster, and impressive visuals, the game suffers from several issues, including server problems, game balance concerns, and an intrusive monetization system. This review will explore the strengths and weaknesses of MultiVersus to provide a comprehensive assessment of the game.

Gameplay and Mechanics:

MultiVersus excels in its fast-paced and engaging gameplay. The combat system is robust and enjoyable, with a variety of unique abilities and characters catering to different playstyles. The game features several modes, including 2v2, 1v1, 4-Player Free For All, Training mode, Arcade mode, and Ranked mode, offering a wide range of options for players to enjoy. The customizable perk loadout system adds another layer of depth, allowing players to tailor their character's abilities to suit their playstyle and synergize with teammates.

Character Roster and Variety:

The roster of MultiVersus features an eclectic mix of iconic characters from diverse franchises, each with their own distinct abilities and personalities. The game does a commendable job of capturing the essence of each character, from their movesets to their voice lines, resulting in an engaging and immersive experience. The variety of characters caters to different playstyles, from bruisers like LeBron James to mages like Bugs Bunny, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Visuals and Aesthetics:

MultiVersus boasts vibrant and appealing visuals with a cartoony art style. The game runs smoothly, maintaining a solid 60 FPS across various systems, and features visually impressive ringout animations that showcase the original source material's style. The aesthetics of the game successfully bring beloved childhood icons to life, making for an enjoyable and nostalgic experience.

Servers and Connectivity:

One of the most significant drawbacks of MultiVersus is its server issues. Many players have reported poor server performance, leading to a less-than-ideal online experience. This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that the game relies heavily on online play, making stable and responsive servers crucial for the enjoyment of the game. The developers must address this issue to ensure a seamless and enjoyable online experience for all players.

Game Balance and Bugs:

MultiVersus suffers from game balance issues, with some characters being overpowered while others are severely underpowered. This lack of balance results in an uneven playing field, making certain characters indispensable while rendering others virtually unusable. Additionally, players have reported numerous bugs since the game's launch, which have yet to be addressed by the developers. These issues, coupled with concerns about inexperienced staff and poor communication with the community, raise concerns about the game's ongoing support and improvement.

Monetization and Microtransactions:

MultiVersus features an extensive monetization system, with various editions of the game offering extra content, as well as microtransactions for in-game items such as skins, emotes, and announcer voices. While it is possible to enjoy the game without spending money, the presence of time-limited content and overpriced items may induce a fear of missing out (FOMO) among players. The game's battle pass has also been criticized for being overpriced compared to similar offerings in other games, further highlighting concerns about the game's monetization system.

Matchmaking and Progression:

The game's matchmaking system has been criticized for its lack of balance, with new players often being pitted against experienced opponents with better perks, leading to uneven and frustrating matches. This issue is particularly problematic for a game that relies heavily on online play and competitive experiences. Improving the matchmaking system to ensure fair and balanced matches would significantly enhance the overall enjoyment of the game.

Future Growth and Potential:

MultiVersus has the potential to grow and expand with regular updates, including new characters, stages, modes, in-game events, skins, and more. The game's current roster of characters and the prospect of future additions make it an exciting prospect for fans of various franchises. However, for the game to reach its full potential, the developers must address the existing issues, such as server problems, game balance, and monetization concerns, to ensure a polished and enjoyable experience for players.

Final Verdict - Good

MultiVersus is a fun and engaging platform fighting game that offers a diverse roster of iconic characters, enjoyable gameplay mechanics, and visually appealing aesthetics. However, the game is marred by server issues, game balance concerns, and an intrusive monetization system. In its current state, MultiVersus can be an enjoyable experience, particularly when playing with friends, but there is significant room for improvement. With the right attention and support from the developers, MultiVersus has the potential to evolve into a standout title in the platform fighting genre.
