Crowd Funded RTS Stormgate Launches Into Paid Early Access
The crowd funded sci-fi RTS Stormgate has launched into paid Early Access on July 30, 2024.
The studio behind Stormgate was founded in 2020 by Blizzard veterans who worked on Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. The project raised over $35 million from investors and an additional $2.4 million on Kickstarter via a crowdfunding effort. The game is built on the Unreal 5 engine and has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre.
While Stormgate will officially launch as a free to play title on August 13, players who can't wait an additional two weeks have been given the opportunity to support the developer further with the purchase of an Early Access pack that grants immediate access. There are three packs available for $25, $40, or $60. The paid packages grant access to additional cosmetics and story missions.
Frost Giant Studios have posted a roadmap that outlines the team's vision for the game in the years ahead. Players can expect a Map Editor, a 3v3 mode, co-op campaigns, and many more campaign missions by the end of 2025.
The RTS genre is still largely dominated by classics like Starcraft Remastered and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, both of which require a paid purchase and have steep learning curves. Stormgate hopes to draw in both veterans of the genre and new players with the help of a modern game engine and a free to play business model.
