Destiny 2 Responds To Shader Issue, Curse Of Osiris Expansion Confirmed

destiny 2 cayde moonDestiny 2 has received excellent reviews since its console launch last Tuesday, except for one tiny little problem: Shaders. Shaders are cosmetic items that alter the color of your gear. In the original Destiny game, shaders were permanent items that, when equipped, changed the color scheme of your entire character. In Destiny 2, however, shaders are consumables that you had to put on every single piece of equipment. In a game where collecting weapons and armor is the norm, players are either forced to grind for more shaders, or – you guessed it – buy them from the game’s cash shop.

Bungie got a lot of flak for this decision especially from Destiny 1 players. And, according to Kotaku, there’s even a massive Reddit thread asking Destiny 2 players to boycott the game’s cash shop. Design Director Luke Smith responds on Twitter:

“Shaders are earned through gameplay: leveling, chests, engrams, vendors. We expect you’ll be flush w/ Shaders as you continue to play. When you reach level 20, Shaders will drop more often: vendor rewards, destination play and endgame activities. Shaders are now an ongoing reward for playing. Customization will inspire gameplay. Each planet has unique armor and Shader rewards. With D2, we want statements like ‘I want to run the Raid, Trials, or go back to Titan to get more of its Shader’ to be possible.”

In other Destiny 2 news, Bungie has implemented Clan Progression and Rewards with the latest patch. Clan Rosters, however, will be coming at a later date. An Xbox Store description also confirms the title of the game’s first DLC expansion.

“Destiny 2 Expansion I: Curse of Osiris continues your Guardian’s journey with all-new story missions and adventures set in a new destination, Mercury. Journey through time and space to learn the secrets of Osiris, avert a dark future, and rebuild the ties between the legendary Warlock and his greatest student - Ikora Rey.”

Marketing Director Eric Osborne also confirmed the existence of the DLC on Twitter today.

According to another Kotaku post, the Curse of Osiris DLC will introduce Mercury as a new zone and is scheduled to be released in December. We’ll keep you posted as we find out more details. Meanwhile, here’s the new Destiny 2 live action trailer just in case you missed it. Check it out after the jump.
