To wipe or not to wipe, that is the question. For Dual Universe, it’s the former. Developer Novaquark has confirmed that the servers will be partially wiped prior to the space sandbox MMORPG’s official launch after weighing the pros and cons of a server wipe for months.

“Deciding whether to reset the server of a persistent, single-shard game like Dual Universe is an enormous and challenging decision,” wrote Creative Director Cyrille Fontaine. “It impacts many departments in the company, such as game design, server, live operations, production, community management, and well, pretty much everyone. But most importantly, it impacts our players. Players who have dedicated time, money, and passion to the game during beta.”

“[…] What lay at the heart of the decision for us was how we would reward the efforts, support, and contributions of our players during beta while still allowing new players the same opportunity to experience a fresh new solar system to settle at launch,” he said.

According to Fontaine, resetting the servers will benefit the game’s performance and economy, and will allow both old and new players to start on equal footing. A reset will also allow the team to introduce planet-wide updates that they couldn’t do while players were building and terraforming them. The creative director promises to reveal more information about these planetary updates soon.

At full launch, beta players will get to keep their character name, core blueprints, and friends list. Organization leaders will also get to keep their organization names, logos, manifestos, and any owned blueprints, although membership will be reset. Beta players will also be rewarded with Pioneer Packs containing in-game currency, talent points, and various materials so they can get off to a running start.

There’s still no word on when Dual Universe will be making the transition to full release but the good news is that you now know what’s waiting for you at the end of beta testing.
