Minecraft ‘Mammoth’ Mod Makes Minecraft A Legit MMO

In its most basic form, Minecraft allows up to a maximum of 8 players in a single world. With a dedicated server, this number goes up to a maximum of 30 players. The more the merrier, right? But what if you could increase the maximum number of allowed players in a server to 1000 without bricking your PC? The recently-released Mammoth server plugin allows you to do just that by allowing multiple Minecraft servers access to the same world data.

Basically, the mod uses the mod-creator’s WorldQL scriptable database and server to store permanent data on world changes and pass player information, such as location, between different Minecraft servers in real-time.

“With this setup, a player can connect to any of the Minecraft servers and receive the same world and player data,” explains the dev. “While still a work in progress, Mammoth offers considerable performance benefits over standard Minecraft servers. It's particularly good for handling very high player counts.”
