As more and more video game companies and studios jump aboard the blockchain train, Minecraft developer Mojang has taken a stand against anything related to blockchain technology, including NFTs. According to the studio, they’re now in the process of updating the Minecraft Usage Guidelines to provide more specific rules on the use of new technologies and will not be supporting or allowing NFT integration in the popular voxel sandbox MMO.

“In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we outline how a server owner can charge for access, and that all players should have access to the same functionality,” said Mojang. “We have these rules to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.”

“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications,” the studio continued, “nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset.”

That being said, Mojang says that they’re still open to the possibility that blockchain technology may have practical applications in gaming and will be watching how the technology evolves over time. For now, you can rest easy knowing that Minecraft will be completely NFT and crypto-free.
