Cryptic Studios is swinging the big bad nerf hammer at companion NPCs in Neverwinter in an upcoming balance update. The dev team offers some insight into why and hot it’s going to go down in a new dev blog.

The team says that the upcoming balance patch will be more comprehensive than previous ones and will focus on reducing the base damage and tweaking damage calculations to bring the top DPS companions more in line with the other AI sidekicks. They won’t just be nerfing everything they can get their hands on though and assures players that the biggest damage dealers will still have the best DPS after they’ve been tweaked.

“The overall goal is to bring the top tier performers more in line with one another and increase the effectiveness of underperformers and niche role companions,” Cryptic explained. “Our adjustments are intended to keep everything at the same relative desirability: if a companion was top tier DPS before, it will still be at the top - just not so far ahead of the pack as to invalidate the use of others.”

The balance changes are set to go live as part of the D&D MMORPG’s next module which will be coming out sometime in March. Prior to that, players can expect the return of the Siege of Neverwinter event which officially kicks off later today.
