Eating and drinking are an important part of our everyday lives. So much so that some MMOs have even incorporated them into their core gameplay mechanics, particularly survival MMOs. In Singularity 6’s upcoming community simulation MMO Palia, however, eating and drinking will still play an important role but won’t be required to enjoy the game.

“These activities are not strictly required,” said Game Director Aidan Karabaich on Twitter, “but they will all have a variety of benefits in the game that make engaging in professions like cooking have real worth. From an incentives perspective, these systems are oriented around having strong benefits for engaging with them over strong penalties for not.”

The post is in line with a series of Twitter recipe reveals highlighting the game’s robust cooking system. Players will be able to cook various food items, such as the classic berry pie or the more exotic nigari, using recipes based on their real-world counterparts.

“Palia’s recipes feature ingredients that you can forage, farm, purchase, and prepare in-game, which you can then transform into your favorite meals,” explained Singularity.

Information about Palia has been somewhat limited since the game was first announced earlier this year. But what we do know is that it’s going to be a social sandbox MMO set in a vast open world inhabited by an elf-like race called the Majiri. Players will be able to build structures, farm, go on adventures, and apparently cook with other players as they experience a constantly-evolving storyline.

Singularity has yet to announce a release date for Palia but we can probably expect to see bits and dribbles of information come out as development continues to progress.
